So I am reading all these stories of how crazy London is now a days. First its people attacking firefights as if it were a recreational activity and now a firefighter is told he will be fired for performing medical training on a few people who were dying. Its crazy I tell you. I <3 fark.com now.

^ I would have gone Tom if it were a perfect world.

If anyone is looking for anti-virus software, DO NOT GO WITH MACAFEE...if you enjoy using your computer. Of course if it works for you, so be it.

Yes it
Norton, MacAfee are crap.  I tried them ALL
Even if they are free I wouldn't use them
They both install so much Bloat which slows down your PC.
Norton corporate isn't to bad but the retail version has to much junk

I use AVG or AVAST  both FREE
I also use BitDefender or Kasperski Both Rated #1 or close to it.

but on my Laptops I use AVG which is actually rated over Norton and Macafee.

Avast is good if you want a virus scanner that can also scan in DOS before Windows Starts.

People throw out computers because they think they are slow due to Viruses and other spyware/Bloatware

Go here www.filehippo.com and download
- CCleaner
- CWShredder
- AVG Free Edition
- HijackThis
- Ad-Aware 2007
- Spybot Search & Destroy

run the above apps to remove Nasties on your machine
And use Firefox over Internet Explorer
And Install as much Memory/Ram  as you can afford in your PC or Laptop
let me know if you need Laptop ram

Although it is more of a enterprise application, Symantec Endpoint Protection is one of, if not the best thing out there.  Their retail stuff sucks though.

^there was something wrong with mine, it wouldn't update and it was giving me all kinds of errors, so I uninstalled it.

I got all my data backed up, so if something happens to the laptop, nothing a quick reformat cant fix.

I'm done with Basic Training! I graduated this past Friday and I am shipping off to Keesler AFB tonight. So I'll be back full time if that's a good thing or bad thing.

I need to buy a laptop, any recommendations?

Depends what you want to do with and and cost
do you want a thin and light laptop or a desktop replacement which are normally bigger
when buying make sure you look at the warranty
most new laptops have only a 1 year warranty

I'm a thinkpad kind of guy  most come with 3 year warranties.
the one I'm using now is a T60  Dual core  I got it used on ebay for $450 (its worth about $1000)
have almost 3 years warranty left on it.

here are some places you can find new laptops under $500

www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals

I just found this Notebook at Staples online for $449 looks super fast also you can use a $30 off coupong to bring it down to $419 free shipping just pay tax this is a awesome deal and I would jump on it ASAP

I can tell you what NOT to get: HP laptops.  Especially the dv2000 line.  I got my first one about a year ago and it died on me 6 months later in August.  It took me over a month for them to replace it, and I only got it back that fast because I got them to admit that they lied to me, raised hell, and they ended up sending me a replacement laptop that was an upgrade of my old one.  This machine so far hasn't had a problem except for the time that it decided it hated life and slid quite magically off of a desk.  They were still lying about how long it would take to get the laptop back to customers, and this time the tech support person told me that the issue before and now was that the dv2000 motherboards have some issues, so they can't keep them in stock since so many are being sent back.

Add the overall suckage of their phone support people, and the fact that one actually yelled at ME because I didn't have a customer support ticket that SHE was supposed to supply me because the last person gave me the old one from the last time my laptop went in for service and I'm never buying their laptops again.

I'll stick with their desktops though since I do love my laptop -when it's working- and my girlfriend's HP desktop survived being launched out of a speeding shopping cart and flying over a car. True story.

RJ, from my usage of my HP Laptop, the Workstations are pretty reliable and run very nicely. The laptop Stevens gave me is running with no problems. Now since it has Vista on it, the whole software portion of it sucks. And I agree with you on the tech support. Luckily I do not have to go throw them in order to get my laptop fixed.

I had a USED  T42 THinkpad 2 years ago
the USB port went bad.
it had a  3 year IBM warranty.

I called them ( IBM )  up
they sent out a Laptop shipping box the next day with free overnight shipping.
I got the laptop back in 4 days with a new motherboard. ( i removed the hard drive B4 i sent it in )
the best service I ever had.

I know a warranty through www.squaretrade.com they will just refund what you paid for the item
they won't even fix it just get you a refund in about a week.
I guess they just then dump them off to people like me.
FYI I normally I will not buy an extended warranty on anything but on a used laptop that adds 2 years for $29 i would. or a $2000 65" LCD if I can get a 3-5 years for under $200. anything that is known to failure ( LCD backlights laptops etc. )

Chuck I have many Used laptops if you want to spend less $
