It's a steel coaster now. I'm not concerned about the G-trains. They roll on steel ok.

Just read on screamscape, Texas Giant when it reopens will have a 79 deg. first drop. The steapest drop on any wood coaster. Whether or not it's still a wooden coaster is up for debate.

They are practically rebuilding the whole ride.
Word is Colossus, Rattler and American Eagle will get the same treatment, as long as the company is satisfied with the results. Of course I believe that came out of the old management, so who knows now. BTW, I believe about half of Colossus' trackbed is already steel anyway.

American Eagle I can see, but colossus might be getting that treatment because everyone shows favoritism towards a coaster packed park within 50 miles of celebrity city.

How is changing a woodie to a steel coaster, to save on maintenance, a sign of favortism to Magic Mountain?

Don't know, I kind of got ahead of myself on that post. But how much is really being invested towards maintenance on colossus, anyway?

Much more than the park wants to spend, I assure you. Hence why they already replaced a substantial amount of the wood track with steal I-beam years ago. Making a wood coaster a steel coaster is not a good thing. I wouldn't be jealous of any park getting the "treatment". Rolling Thunder does not need this. It just needs to be maintained and properly greased and perhaps some magnetic brakes so the grease won't make the trains fail the slide test.

I thought they were putting it all in at once like Texas Giant. It was really that bad to where it's partial steel in areas?

And the average rider hadn't even noticed. The distinction between what is wood and what is steel is more of an artificial one than most think...Few even knew what had been done to that California woodie until after plans for Texas Giant were announced. After the debate as to whether TG would become steel started, a few park employees leaked the SFMM news about that wooden coaster and what has been done. Some places some would call it steel while much of the original track remains. What say ye now?

I have no idea what you're talking about. I first heard about Colossus having steel track sections back in 2006, long before the Texas Giant thing came to light. It's kind of subtle on Colossus as the haven't replaced all of the wood, but I reckon the Texas Giant treatment is going to feel more like Gemini/Excalibur than... wood. I'm not disputing the public's blissful ignorance to such things.

LOL Thanks.
Honestly I thought Colossus' situation was common knowledge long before now.

Is there any key story you can point to that started the widespread realization of Colossus being less of a wood coaster? I missed it I guess.

See the 3/11, 3/12 and 13/10 entries under Texas Giant here:

Surprisingly, Lance has not gone back and edited this (yet, read quick) to take out any indications of surprise!

Wow, interesting. Can't believe he didn't know that already.
I thought I had heard American Eagle had some steel too, but was surprised to hear about Texas Giant's first drop and Psyclone having some.

I rarely hear of anything that happens out there. Usually when I do it's from this site, anyway.

I don't understand why they would do it to American Eagle, as it seems to be fairly well maintained anyways. Sadly, Colossus has been so poorly maintained (as well as other rides at that park under former management) that giving it the Texas Giant treatment might make it ridable.
I can see it being done to Rattler, as it's a big wooden coaster that really takes a lot of money to maintain, and isn't pulling in a lot of riders. I could see this being done to Son of Beast too, if CF is so inclined, and maybe even Mean Streak.
I think for the smaller woodies, like AM Eagle, Rolling Thunder, etc, good maintenance would suffice, but on the larger wooden coasters that maintenance isn't going to help, this kind of transofrmation isn't terrible. Heck, I wouldn't be riding Mean Streak or SoB unless they did something drastic anywho.

Assuming there isn't another American Eagle other than the one at sfga, then I would be totally opposed to this. After riding it just last night, I'd ask they don't change a thing. It was one of the best coaster experiences I've ever had and it's just fine the way it is! Maybe the only spot that could use to help is the mini helix right at the end but that's it!

American Eagle a small woodie? It's got a 147 foot drop and 4650 feet of track (per side) for crying out loud!

No Matt, you're WRONG!
I meant that as in, it isn't a mega woody like Mean Streak, Rattler, TX Giant, SOB, etc.

I think it is definitely a megawoodie, but regardless, it's too tall and fast for its own good (the way it was constructed), so I'm not surprised at all that they would invest in this.
