Just reading that and viewing those couple photos made me sick.  Cedar Fair sucks.

More information, including a statement that ACE made a proposal on the land that includes proposed preserving the Big Dipper...

found on http://groups.google.com/group/rec.roller-coaster/browse_thread/thread/0049173949440e02?hl=en

Don't get too excited yet. The $5000 bid is subject to Cedar Fair's
approval. Before the ride was put up for auction, Norton's announced
that Cedar Fair "offered the coaster to ACE and other groups but no
one accepted the offer." Carol Sanderson said that this was not true
and the auctioneer (only half in jest I think, said something to the
effect to shut that lady up and have security escort her off the
property. HHmm

The same bidder bought the Bobs and its maintenance shop for $2500. :o By
the way, a pile of rocks sold for $3000! The ride relocator refused to
talk about plans for the coaster.

Villain sold for $30,000  :o and the looper sold for $23,000, both to a
Cleveland scrap dealer. The observation tower was also sold to be
scrapped.  :'(

Rick

Knoebel's bought the Dog Pounder game, a kiddie ride, and some kitchen
equipment. Schlitterbahn bought most of the flat rides.

Actual video of the Big Dipper sale (will not work in Firefox, at least not for me. I opened the link in Windows Media Player, and it worked fine):

Somebody posted an outstanding photo trip report of the entire event.  He even walked up through queues and took photos of old ride sites.  To be honest, it was horribly depressing.  He also talked about how rude the auctioneers were and how lame of an event Cedar Fair put on.  They had the opportunity to win back long lost fans by adding a bit of respect and nostalgia and they did neither.

It's a sad day when any coaster is sold for scrap...

This situation as a whole has been sad to watch unfold

What im failing to understand is whats the big deal to keep Big Dipper as like a separate side attraction that you charge people to ride?

The big deal is Cedar Fair has all the land for sale, and wants the biggest price it can get for it.  An operating coaster is not a good idea for a retail center, etc.  See Coney Island....

An update and rundown, of sorts, on the status of Geauga Lake Amusement Park and the Big Dipper, in particular:
