Most Irrigation is from non potable water sources such as lakes,irrigation pond or wells.sometimes you can see the pumps or pump houses on the side of these ponds.
Yes Iron will leave red stains on surfaces.
One good thing about high iron levels at least for lawns is that Iron makes the grass very green.
